Saturday

  • Raincross Ride – 7:30 A.M. from Alabama and Barton Road in Redlands.

The roundtrip totals about 60 miles and departs from Stell’s Coffee Shop (corner of Alabama and Barton Road in Redlands) at 7:30 sharp on Saturday mornings. The year-around ride really has three parts: 1) the 18-mile warm-up ride over to Riverside; 2) a very fast 24-mile middle loop through Riverside and the edge of Corona; and 3) the cool-down ride returning to Redlands. Besides Citrus Valley Velo riders, two or three other teams regularly participate in this ride. We make the 18-mile trip from Redlands through mostly back roads to the parking lot near Central and Magnolia in Riverside. Participant numbers vary but it is common to have 30-50 riders. We leave the parking lot and go down Brockton to Mary St. to Victoria and turn southwest to Madison where we turn left. Be prepared, because this point marks the beginning of about the next 50 minutes of flat-out race-pace riding. A gradual incline along Madison for about ¾ of a mile ends to a right turn onto Dufferin Ave. Dufferin takes us through mostly flat terrain through some orange groves. We turn right onto La Sierra and ride the steep downhill to Victoria where we turn left for a short distance and then turn right down another grade (Fillmore) to Indiana Ave where we turn left. Indiana takes us (southwest) over rollers for several miles and sweeps around to the right at the end, becoming Grant for a short distance to Magnolia. A right turn on Magnolia for ½ mile leads to a right on McKinley and a 2 percent incline for about ¾ of a mile, where we return to (left turn onto) Indiana. Again, rollers for several miles characterize this section. A right turn onto Fillmore introduces an extended (about a mile) uphill to a left at the top (Victoria Ave.) cresting onto an open section that overlooks the La Sierra /Victoria intersection about ½ mile away. The rest of the ride is flat down Victoria Ave.(4 miles) across Van Buren Blvd. to the finish line just southwest of Washington St. We then ride the 18 miles back to the coffee shop at Alabama and Barton in Redlands for a total distance of about 60 miles. We regularly stop on the return trip at an AM/PM market (University and Iowa) in Riverside for water. We are customarily back in Redlands by about 11:15
